1.7 million tons of electrical and electronic waste are produced in Germany every year. A large proportion is still lying at home in drawers or in the cellar. Valuable raw materials are thus deprived of reuse. The collection rate is correspondingly low. The students now want to change this in the course of the project and thus make an important contribution to the environment.
To accompany the project, the students actively deal with recycling and the effects of electronic waste on people and the environment in their social studies lessons. In this way, not only is ecological awareness and sustainable action promoted; valuable raw materials are also returned to the cycle at the same time.
Over the next few weeks, the students' goal is to collect as much electronic waste as possible from the neighborhood. They are looking for anything that does not have a built-in rechargeable battery or batteries: disused smartphones, cell phones, DVD players, toasters, alarm clocks and more. The devices may have a maximum edge length of 50cm.
Interested households can write to the project team of the Euregio comprehensive school Epe at the mail address e-waste-race@egs.gronau.de. Afterwards, the students pick up the e-waste and get points for it.
